Period Duration

10 classes/weeks
2 hours a class/week

Summary

In this class, we will practice a dance improvisation approach created by Rabbani Sayed.

To be able to improvise you need a certain foundation in which you can improvise.

We will focus on the technique and vocabulary of breaking as well as other hiphop/urban dance styles that focus on improvisational practice, but also other aspects of life and people in life that inspired Rabbani to move the way he does.

The class will rely on the power of self-learning, inviting the student to find their own creative resources and autonomy.

Content and structure of the class

We will learn physical fundamental movements and vocabulary, working on a limited amount of moves – 2-step, 6-step, sweeps and back-rocks – that we will take time to master with clarity. Once these foundational steps are integrated, students will be able to reinvent them as they wish.

Part of each class will focus on developing strength, agility, control, and mental readiness, necessary conditions for improvisation. Students will be developing a flexible and alert physicality. They should be able to realize their movement choices with precision at any given moment with a sense of ease and effortlessness.

PROGRAM

class 1 and 2: INSPIRATION

In the first class we will mainly take a look at different styles of dance that inspired OMG and elaborate on what inspired me about it.
We are going to watch styles like Voguing, Breaking, Memphis Jookin, Popping and House. But also music genres like Pop, Reggae, Jazz
and Rap.

Stories and interviews of Jazz musicians and Rap legends that are significant for the energy of this dance approach.

class 3 and 4: CONDITIONING THE BODY

In class 3 and 4 we will work on conditioning the body to be able to carry out the movements correctly, with ease and control. This is very important because it is easy to injure oneself in the process of doing, unless you take the time to adapt the body to certain postures.

Repetition of basic moves such a standing, sitting, laying down and the different ways of doing so. We will explore the range of these foundational movements. This will make the individual agile and ready.

class 5 and 6: FLOW

With the use of certain phrases, I have developed a particular way to transform basic positions of the body (such as standing, sitting and laying down) into one movement. This part is pure physical training and repetition. After a while the transitions between the different levels of the body will feel very smooth and natural. This is what we call flow. Once these phrases are mastered the student will have a better understanding of how to flow, how it should feel and how to use it in your own way.

class 7 and 8: CONCEPTUAL TRAINING

By limiting yourself, you become more creative and thus will be able to create endlessly. We will limit ourselves by only using a set of moves and try to find loopholes. This will enhance your flow, which is what OMG stands for. Less is more.

class 9 and 10: FREESTYLE / IMPROVISATION

In this class we will focus on freestyling/ improvising. We will try to use the knowledge we have obtained throughout the process and trust ourselves that whatever we do is perfectly fine. Accept that everything you do looks good on you. In improvising there are no mistakes. It is only about feeling. So the individual decides whether the freestyle is a success or not. This creates artistic freedom and being able to self reflect.
